Online Learning

“The ability to complete the ASEM program online is the only reason I’m able to juggle my job and the ASEM program. I made friends and contacts that I feel I will stay in touch with throughout the duration of my career.”

Cara Clark
Class of fall 2012

Is Online Learning Right for You?

Take our online survey to learn whether a fully online program is a good fit for you.

Online Learning Platform

Coursework, discussion boards, online chats, and much more are delivered through Canvas, UAB's online learning platform. Canvas is a modern, easy-to-use, cloud-based online platform that you can use from any internet connected device as long as it meets the technical specifications. This means you can watch course videos, read academic articles, or post to discussion boards from the device of your choice — a smart phone, tablet, or computer.

  • Live Class Sessions

“The reason I chose UAB’s program is that the schedule worked for my lifestyle as a working professional, having children and a family, so I chose UAB’s online program above others in the country.”

    Charles Hines
    Class of fall 2019

Online participation in weekly 1 to 1.5 hour live class sessions is required for all courses. These sessions are held on Sunday afternoons or weekday evenings (U.S. Central time). Classes are scheduled to provide as much flexibility as possible for working professionals. These required live class sessions provide instructors an opportunity to communicate course-specific information, present new material, and facilitate discussions on safety related topics.

  • Virtual Seminars

These virtual seminar presentations feature our Practitioner Scholars and allow students within the ASEM program to interact with industry experts and participate in engaging discussions on topics related to safety engineering.

  • Required Equipment

To complete ASEM coursework and participate in the real-time online sessions, you will need access to a computer, a headset with a microphone, and a webcam. You will also need access to a scanner because some assignments are completed by hand, scanned, and submitted electronically. A high-speed internet connection is not required, but it is very strongly recommended.

  • Technical Support (Canvas and Computer)

You may occasionally encounter technical issues with your computer or Canvas while completing ASEM coursework, but help is not far away.

    Canvas

For technical issues with Canvas, support can be reached via phone, email, or chat. Canvas provides 24/7 technical support.

    Computer Support

For computer related technical issues, ASKIT (UAB's computer support specialists), are here to help you. You can reach AskIT by phone, chat, or email.
