Biomedical Engineering students working on a project. Honors students take advanced courses and participate in research under the guidance of graduate students and faculty members. Research may be conducted both in UAB labs and as interns with engineering firms and other participating employers. Engineering students who enroll in the UAB Honors College (usually the Science and Technology Honors Program) often go on to enroll in 5th Year Master's Programs.

Invitations to participate in the program are extended by the Dean’s office in May of each year.

Benefits

The Honors Program helps students develop confidence and independence while boosting communication and research skills. Research experiences may present opportunities to publish or present at professional conferences—a good thing to have on a job or graduate school application. Students working as interns in industry can gain practical experience that will be an advantage during the job hunt.

Students who complete an honors program in engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0 will receive a bachelor’s degree “with Honors” in addition to any university honors designations.
