PhD in Biomedical Science / Master of Public Health

Program Description 

This coordinated degree program is offered through UAB Graduate Biomedical Sciences and UAB School of Public Health.

A mission of UAB is to be a research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social and economic benefit of Birmingham, the State and beyond. Therefore, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health have aligned their educational strength in the Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Sciences with a Master’s Degree in Public Health, to offer a truly interdisciplinary approach to learning. 

Program Requirements

Students must complete the standard PhD theme plan in addition to 30 credit hours in MPH*. Twelve credit hours from the GBS curriculum are credited toward the MPH degree for a total of 42 MPH credit hours. Students may complete the MPH degree program totally online, in class, or through a mix of online and in class experiences. Please see the following GBS PhD/MPH theme training plan. 

Application Process

Students apply separately to the GBS and MPH programs. Upon acceptance to the PhD program, students will be automatically accepted to the MPH program.

PhD in Biomedical Science / Master of Business Administration- Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship

Program Description 

This coordinated degree program is offered through UAB Graduate Biomedical Sciences and UAB Collat School of Business. 

UAB's Graduate Biomedical Sciences and UAB's Collat School of Business have partnered to offer a dual PhD/MBA degree in biomedical sciences and management to high-achieving research leaders. A dual PhD/MBA degree can open opportunities for researchers and lead to greater management responsibilities within their organizations.

Program Requirements

Twelve credit hours from the GBS curriculum are credited toward the MBA degree for a total of 42 MBA credit hours. Students may complete the MBA degree program online, in class, or through a mix of online and in class experiences. Please see the following GBS PhD/MBA theme training plan.

*Please note: MPH and MBA courses cannot be covered by GBS student tuition support.

Students must complete the Joint Degree Program-Theme Director Approval Form prior to completing the coordinated courses and the Joint Degree Program- Mentor Approval Form prior to selecting a mentor. These forms serve as documentation and approval between the GBS office, theme directors, mentor, and student.
