Professional Development Program

To succeed in many careers today, it is not enough to have a new degree or specialty. Increasingly, employers want diverse, well-rounded and knowledgeable professionals who can move quickly from team to team and project to project. That’s why the Graduate School at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) supports graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with an extensive Professional Development Program (PDP @ UAB).

Directed by Dr. Kellie R. Carter, the PDP offers more than 30 courses and workshops – for graduate elective credit – in essential skill sets, such as ethics, leadership, mentoring, teaching, presenting, team building, writing and publishing, with the opportunity to earn professional certificates. PDP @ UAB also gives free instructional workshops to help students speed time to degree. Get job-ready before you graduate. Check out the PDP @ UAB for:

12PM - 1PM Shelby 105 - Accelerate Your Thesis & Dissertation: Plan the Writing/Work the Plan -- FREE Mini-Workshop.

Dissertation and thesis writers are encouraged to write daily to make progress. “Write a dissertation in 15 minutes a day,” the self-help books promise. But regular output may be impossible if writers do not possess 4 essential tools and strategies – 1) a creative jumpstart to the writing process, 2) a realistic and SMART writing plan, 3) clear chapter or article outlines, and 4) effective time-management habits. Workshop participants will be coached in all 4 essentials and leave with momentum to continue daily writing. Feel free to bring your lunch. 12PM - 1PM Shelby 105 - Crossing the Finish Line!-- FREE Mini-Workshop.

How do you manage a dissertation manuscript in the last pressure-packed month? What should you expect from the defense? What if committee members disagree? Did you save enough time for final polishing, formatting, and proofing? Most importantly, how do you know when you are done? Workshop participants will answer these questions, and practice revising and editing techniques as well as strategies for responding to the committee chair and members in preparation for: 1) the dissertation defense and 2) the final submission of the manuscript to the UAB Graduate School. Feel free to bring your lunch. To register, click on this Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/accelerate-your-dissertation-spring-2020-series-tickets-88956618641.
