Imagine the bustling streets of a flourishing city nestled in the foothills of the magnificent Appalachian Mountains. Here, in the nation’s third largest hospital, doctors, researchers, and scientists contribute greatly to the development of medicine and life saving techniques. These very same professionals impart their knowledge and experience as they teach our enrolled students. Imagine each student reaching new heights of discovery and knowledge with every class they complete. You now have a picture of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Founded in 1945 as an Academic Health Sciences Center, UAB now ranks as 149th (top 0.6%) globally in the Center for World University Rankings for the impact of research and teaching. Our campus encompasses 100 blocks in the heart of Birmingham, located in central Alabama. Nicknamed “The Magic City”, Birmingham once thrived on steel, iron, and the industries they brought. Today our charming southern oasis bursts with science, research and entrepreneurship. We have more green space per capita than any other city in the country. Birmingham offers countless unique attractions which include Vulcan Park and Museum, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, McWane Science Center and Sloss Furnaces. Our enviable social scene boasts numerous delectable restaurants, one of which recently garnered this year’s James Beard Award for America’s Most Outstanding Restaurant.

UAB Graduate School is providing and inspiring today’s accomplished scholars with a roadmap designed to transform tomorrow by improving lives globally. Thirteen of our Graduate School programs rank among the top 25 in “America’s Best Graduate Schools” list by U.S. News & World Report 2019.

The diverse makeup of UAB Graduate School includes students, faculty, and staff who proudly represent over 100 countries. There are 7,100 graduate students involved in research. We host several reoccurring outreach events including Discoveries in the Making and 3 Minute Thesis, which supply both current students and postdocs the opportunity to share their research and interact with the surrounding community. At the Graduate School, we highlight our students’ successes, and we advocate for them as they forge their future.

Thank you for your interest in UAB. I invite you to visit our campus and experience for yourself our warm and welcoming community. Our UAB Graduate School website has been recently updated, helping to provide you with the latest information on our Graduate School programs and resources.
