In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center (EACC) invites you to light a candle for victims of family and domestic violence, child abuse, intimate partner abuse or elder abuse. Throughout the month of October, honor a loved one touched by domestic violence by leaving a message of support, encouragement or remembrance. Fill out the Light a Candle form below to add your voice to our virtual candlelight vigil.
Now through October 31, 2025, the EACC is collecting toiletry items to benefit the YWCA of Central Alabama's emergency shelters and domestic violence services. Visit go.uab.edu/stopDV for more details on this and other domestic violence events and resources.
I am lighting a candle for all the people who don't know yet that leaving for good will be the best thing they can do.
As someone who went back over and over and over only for the abuse to grow even worst each time, I now know the feeling I used to have of wanting to go back was just my brain trying to go back to what became familiar.
It truly does get better when you can leave.

This candle is for Candy who stoically handled so much pain, and we didn't even know. I'm glad you're now free from those years and living safely and joyfully. xoxo
— Stacey
To all - you are worthy to be cherished. Your life and your ability to flourish matters. My thoughts are with the men, women, and children who have endured pain when what you deserved was love. Don't walk it alone. Reach out to a trusted friend or support person today.
— Nic
💜 To survivors of domestic violence: we see you, we believe you, and we stand with you. Your strength in the face of unimaginable pain is a testament to your courage. You are not alone. For those who lost to domestic violence. Each name, each story, each soul deserves to be honored. Their absence is a call to action, a reminder that silence can be deadly and that love should never hurt. May their memory fuel our commitment to end the cycle of abuse and build a world where safety and dignity are a right, not a privilege.
— Kourtney
Lighting this candle in memory of my mom who was tragically taken away from my sister and I on 2/14/2012. Love should NEVER hurt! Speak up. Reach out. Remember that you are ENOUGH. Safety, healing and hope is waiting for you!!! #EndDV #End the silence

You are incredibly special, and you deserve to be reminded of that every single day. Your strength, courage, and resilience shine through in all you do. Every sacrifice you’ve made has shaped the beautiful journey you’re on—and it’s nothing short of inspiring.

Today, I honor the memory of my Aunt Shellane L. Green, who tragically lost her life to domestic violence on March 1, 2011. Her life mattered. Her story matters. And she is deeply missed.
This post is not only for her, but for all those who didn’t survive. For every name we know and every name we don’t, your lives were precious. You deserved safety, love, and peace.
Domestic violence is a silent epidemic that affects countless lives. By speaking out, we remember those we’ve lost and stand with those still fighting. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please know that help is available. You are not alone.
Let’s continue to raise awareness, support survivors, and honor the memory of those who should still be here.
