The Good News for the Week of January 12. pdf

Vikas Bhatia, MD (Fellow, Division of Cardiovascular Disease) first-authored the article “Beta-Blocker Use and 30-Day All-Cause Readmission in Medicare Beneficiaries with Systolic Heart Failure.” He and his mentor, Ali Ahmed, MD, report that it was posted as top news on Medscape’s Cardiology and Heart Wire web sites and will be published soon in the American Journal of Medicine.

The Department celebrates six faculty members who were elected to the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation this year:

  • Christina A. Muzny, MD (Infectious Diseases)
  • Isabel Scarinci, PhD (Preventive Medicine)
  • Steven G. Lloyd, MD, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease)
  • Jessica S. Merlin, MD, MBA (Infectious Diseases)
  • Himanshu Gupta, MD (Cardiovascular Disease)

Mack Brown, MD,
and Mary Kate Reischmann, MD (First Year Residents) were presented the C. Glenn Cobbs Award for Excellence in November 2014 for having the best admission write-ups at the VA.

Thirty-six participants, including Joshua Stripling, MD, (Third Year Resident) will attend the Gorgas Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine for two months beginning in February. UAB Infectious Diseases faculty, led by Dr. David Freedman, team with colleagues from Universidad Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, to combine classroom, laboratory and field experiences in this prestigious course. 

In his December TEDx Talk, Dr. Stefan Kertesz (Preventive Medicine) shared how our thoughts of heroes may be undermining society's ability to make a real impact for those most in need.

  • Marc Nivet, EdD, from the AAMC will be here January 21 to speak on the topic: “Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine: From Fairness to Excellence.”
  • Dean Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, will present his State of the School of Medicine address on January 28 during our regular MGR time slot, speaking from noon until 1:15 p.m.
  • David Schwartz, MD, from the Univ. of Colorado will be in WP-E on January 28 at 4:00 p.m. as a guest of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. Reception to follow.
