Racial Justice Statement

In the aftermath of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Rayshard Brooks, the UAB School of Medicine reaffirms our condemnation of racism in all of its forms.

We acknowledge its existence and commit to proactively working to root out inequalities that have existed for far too long. We cannot reach our full potential and impact while members of our community face systemic discrimination. As an academic medical center, we understand that racism, unconscious bias, health disparities, and other forms of prejudice are present in health care throughout the United States. We recognize that we are not immune to these kinds of failings and that we are in a position of influence to work towards eliminating them. We commit to taking on that leadership in Alabama and beyond. We acknowledge Birmingham’s important civil rights legacy, and we pledge to do our part to make our city a beacon of hope. We stand with our students, trainees, faculty, and staff in this commitment at all times—especially during this period of deep pain and anguish in the Black/African American community.
