Foot and Ankle ProgramOur comprehensive foot and ankle fellowship program provides training in all aspects of foot and ankle care, ranging from detailed conservative management to reconstructive surgery in adults. Problems related to the great and lesser toes, midfoot, hindfoot, and the ankle are treated routinely. Arthroscopic procedures, total ankle arthroplasty, tendo Achilles reconstructions, and complex hindfoot procedures are only some of the variety of procedures performed at this center. Experience in foot and ankle trauma is also provided.

Foot and Ankle Option 2Fellows participate in all aspects of care, in the clinic and operating room. Weekly conferences, monthly journal clubs, and clinical and basic science research round out the experience. Three fellows work with foot and ankle specialists Drs. John S. Kirchner, Ashish Shah, and Michael Johnson. Our program is integrated with the orthopaedic residency so that fellows work with the attendings and residents to gain a fully university-based experience.

Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in both private practice and academics. Over 100 graduates of the program are in practice nationally and internationally. Two AOFAS presidents are graduates of the program along with numerous others with national reputations as clinicians, researchers, and teachers. All fellows receive a salary at the PGY-6 level, must be eligible for Alabama licensure, and receive a UAB instructor appointment. International candidates must have passed the USMLE 3 exam. Fellows work at the UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, VA Administration, and a private inpatient and outpatient setting.
