Faculty, residents, and staff from the UAB Departent of Pathology are sharing their hobbies from home in an effort to connect across the department.

Greg Davis, M.D., Professor, Division Director, Forensic Pathology

Dr. Davis is continuing his lifelong hobby of bread baking. He says, "I began making bread as a teenager. I like well-made bread and coaxing the dough along to form a delicious loaf. It is easy to begin baking bread. The most important ingredient in bread making is patience. You must work with the bread, not against it."

Vishnu Reddy, M.D., Professor, Anatomic Pathology, Laboratory Medicine

Dr. Reddy has been continuing his long-time hobby of macrophotography and image stacking, which is the enlargement of images to show fascinating details of varying objects. He says, "Over the years, I acquired several components including Olympus/Nikon digital cameras, bellows, macro stepper motor rails, special macro lenses and LED fiber optic lighting. In the last few weeks, with more free time available at home, I had a chance to set up the equipment and ran several photo sessions." Reddy says this hobby is not difficult, and especially great now for anyone to explore.

Over the years, I acquired several components including Olympus/Nikon digital cameras, bellows, macro-stepper motor rails, special macro lenses and LED fiber optic lighting etc (Fig. 1). Most macro-lenses (microscope objectives included) have very limited focusing range or depth-of field (1/10 to 1/100 of millimeter). Amanda Ramirez, MPH/MBA, Program Manager, Molecular and Cellular Pathology

"The hobby I've been indulging in lately has been freehand embroidery. I learned how to embroider last October by taking a class at the Birmingham Museum of Art. I like that it's something I can do with my hands but still listen or engage in conversation quite easily. My niece Isa was born in March and I'm finally making progress on my gift for her." Ramirez says her hobby is not difficult and anyone with interest should try a pattern.

Monica Henderson, Residency Program Manager

Henderson first began playing ukulele when she first visited her family in Oahu, HI. Over the years, her ukuleles have collected dust until recently when she and her son, Ayden, decided to master the art of ukulele together. She says, "I am a beach girl at heart, so the sound of the ukulele is soothing and it also reminds me of my family's background, from Hawaii and the Philippines. Music class was added to my son's class schedule to give us both a break and a creative outlet."

Natalie Larsen, M.D., Pathology Resident (PGY1)

"With some of the time off, I've started painting more. I have always liked art projects and used to paint with my mom when I was younger. I do a few things here and there, but hadn't in a while. These are a few I've done recently- all gifts for people!"

new hobby for me. My hobby remains mylifelong hobby of baking, particularly making bread. I have attached a photograph from yesterday, as I was milling wheat to make flour.
