The department contains seven divisions.

These include Anatomic Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, Genomic Diagnostics and Bioinformatics, Neuropathology, Forensic Pathology, and Women's Health.

Anatomic Pathology

Our Division conducts basic and translational research with the goal of increasing our understanding of the mechanisms driving organ-directed disease processes and of furthering diagnostic techniques such as immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics.

Special interests/expertise include: heart, lung, GI, liver, breast, kidney, genitourinary tract, ENT, non-neoplastic and neoplastic bone and skin disease, as well as specialized investigations of embryo and fetal disease

Forensic Pathology

The division is one of a handful of forensic pathology divisions fully incorporated into the Department of Pathology in an academic medical center, and we offer a one-year fellowship in forensic pathology. We provide forensic pathology services to Jefferson County, Alabama (Birmingham and surrounding region) in a medical examiner system. Our forensic pathologists perform approximately 650 postmortem examinations annually through the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office. The division's three pathologists are Diplomates of the American Board of Pathology in forensic pathology.

Genomics Diagnostics and Bioinformatics

The Division of Genomics Diagnostics and Bioinformatics provides clinical, educational and research expertise in genomic diagnostics and bioinformatics throughout the academic medical center. Currently the Division and UAB Hospital’s Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory conducts wide range of molecular diagnostic testing for infectious diseases and oncologic disorders using various techniques including: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR (RT-PCR), Sanger sequencing, fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) and next-generation sequencing for the UAB Health System.

Molecular and Cellular Pathology

Pathology's Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology comprises 26 full-time faculty, at all ranks, with active research laboratories focused on the molecular mechanisms that underlie the development of disease. Current areas of research in the Division include cardiovascular disease, cancer, bone biology, liver and digestive diseases, diabetes and insulin resistance, matrix biology, HIV and free radical biology.

Neuropathology

The UAB Division of Neuropathology is one of the largest and one of the most successful Neuropathology Divisions in the country. It is home to three faculty members, and hosts a long-standing, accredited NP fellowship training program. We are committed to excellence in clinical service, scientific research, and teaching.

Women's Health

The Division of Women’s Health serves to unify the subspecialties we have honed in women’s health in pathology as a field—obstetrics/gynecology, breast, perinatal—and bring them under one umbrella. UAB is highly ranked in the diagnosis and treatment of women’s health issues, and women’s health makes up one of the busiest clinical services in the department. The three primary goals for the division at its outset are to aid in recruiting talented individuals to UAB to focus on women’s health; to enhance diagnostic and molecular testing in areas impacting women’s health; and to build a research portfolio in these areas.
