The UAB Department of Surgery has announced the creation of the FUSSION (Future Surgeons & Scientists Investigating Oncology) program.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Departments of Pathology and Surgery attended this year’s International Society of Uterine Transplantation (ISUTx) 4th State-of-the-Art Meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, from September 5-6, 2024. This year’s meeting celebrated the 10th year anniversary of a special and historic event – the birth of the first baby born from a transplanted uterus. The now 10-year-old Vincent opened the meeting and welcomed the clinicians and scientists from around the world who are working hard to promote growth of the field.

Eleanor Ellsworth, a student from Rhodes College who conducted research under the guidance of Angela Carter, Ph.D., through the Summer in Biomedical Science Undergraduate Research program, secured second place in the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

UAB Division of Breast & Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor Lily Gutnik, M.D., MPH, was awarded the Breast Surgery International (BSI) Free Paper Prize at the International Surgical Week, which was hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 25-29, 2024 for her research on leveraging breast cancer survivors to help reduce stigma and accept treatment among breast cancer patients in Tanzania.

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery said farewell – and welcome aboard – to the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellows at a dinner on Friday, July 19 at The Club atop Red Mountain.
