Dr. Porrett was born in Port Huron Michigan and grew up in a farming community outside the suburbs of Detroit. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston IL where she obtained a B.A. in French. She stayed in Chicago to obtain her M.D. at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine before moving to Philadelphia for surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, she completed a residency in general surgery, a fellowship in transplantation surgery, and a PhD in immunology. While on the surgical faculty at Penn, Dr. Porrett started the third uterus transplant program in the United States in conjunction with colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She also specialized in living donor kidney transplantation and was the surgical director for Penn’s living donor kidney transplant program.

Dr. Porrett joins UAB as the Director for Clinical & Translational Research for the Comprehensive Transplant Institute (CTI). She is also the inaugural director of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) for the CTI. Her NIH-funded immunology laboratory studies maternal immune cell fate and function during pregnancy in both human and animal models. Dr. Porrett is a national and international leader in the field of uterus transplantation. She is a founding member of the United States Uterus Transplant Consortium and is a board member for the International Society of Uterus Transplantation. She also currently serves on the VCA Committees for the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network (OPTN/UNOS).
