Biography

Dr. Gelbard received her medical degree from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, after which she completed a general surgery residency at NY Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center. Her postgraduate training also included a clinical fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Miami/Ryder Trauma Center and a clinical fellowship in trauma at the LAC + USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Gelbard came to UAB from Emory University School of Medicine, where she spent six year as a Trauma/Acute Care Surgeon in the Emory Division of Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital. She was the Grady Surgical ICU Medical Director and Associate Program Director for the Emory Surgical Critical Care Fellowship for 2017-2019.

Dr. Gelbard's ongoing research projects include single center studies focused on outcomes of traumatic brain injury to large multi-center trials on the management of complex trauma patients. She is currently a principal investigator on a Department of Defense-funded prospective observational study correlating outcomes data with biomarker information to develop validated predictive models and clinical decision support tools for the management of severe abdominal trauma.
