BIRMINGHAM, AL — A UAB optometrist recently received the 1999 Prentice Society's Award for Excellence in Clinical Education. The award was presented to John F. Amos, O.D., professor at the UAB School of Optometry, at the Society's annual meeting in Seattle.

Dr. Amos joined the faculty of the UAB School of Optometry as an assistant professor in July 1972. He has served as chief of optometry services at the Diabetes Research and Education Hospital, course coordinator of clinical examination of the visual system course, clinical management of visual problems course and director of the school's residency program. In 1982, he was promoted to professor and he currently serves as the chairman of the Department of Optometry and director of the school's professional program. He received his degree from Illinois College of Optometry in 1965.

The award is given annually to an educator who has made significant and enduring contributions to the clinical training of optometrists.

The Prentice Society is composed of optometrists from schools and colleges of optometry and from private practice who, like Society namesake Charles F. Prentice, "seeks to elevate the optometrist to the highest proficiency of his calling."

The Award for Excellence in Clinical Education is the only annual award recognizing contributions to the clinical training of optometrists.
