Students volunteering in City as Classroom t-shirtsThis fall, nearly 400 students participated in the annual “Into the Streets” service day, wearing new City as Classroom t-shirts.

Each year, as part of the Blazer Core on-ramp, the Division of Student Affairs hosts “Into the Streets” – a day of community service where groups of students volunteer at numerous sites, such as schools, churches, YMCAs, and more, around the Birmingham community.

Students participated using BlazerPulse, a volunteer tracking system, and were encouraged to reflect on their experience afterwards. Students received the t-shirts before the 2025 UAB Convocation Ceremony as part of their welcome to campus.

The shirts feature the logo of UAB’s 2025-2030 Quality Enhancement Plan, “The City Is Our Classroom.” The QEP theme recognizes the important role UAB holds in the city of Birmingham, and the powerful learning that can occur as students engage with their community.

“It’s exciting to see our students going out into the community with such purpose. They make a positive contribution through their service, but also learn a great deal in the process," said Scott Phillips, Ph.D., vice provost for Innovative Teaching and Academic Engagement. “When our students are out and about wearing their green shirts with the UAB logo on the front and the Birmingham skyline on the back, they communicate to everyone who sees them that UAB students are a force for good in the community."
