Women form a large majority of UAB’s employee and student population — to the tune of 67% of employees and 63% of students. The Commission on the Status of Women, headed by incoming chair Donna Williamson, works to promote gender inclusion and equity by supporting and improving options and opportunities for women at UAB through advocacy, education and programming.

It’s time to build UAB’s seventh Habitat House — the university’s first following a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals with a willingness to work can register to volunteer on BlazerPulse, UAB's community engagement platform, for slots available 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday Sept. 29-Nov. 5.

The annual initiative from UAB Employee Wellness provides a free, 15-minute health screening to all benefit-eligible UAB, UAB Hospital, UAB LLC, UAB Health System/UA Health Services Foundation and Cooper Green employees.

UAB Campus Dining has been given a tall order to complete during the World Games in Birmingham. They must serve 10,000 meals to up to 3,400 diners per day, all while navigating labor and supply chain challenges and meeting impeccable food safety standards. How can they possibly do it? Simple. They have a recipe for success, and it calls for equal parts experience, efficiency, quality and taste, garnished with a side of good ol’ Southern hospitality.

Morgan Peach, graduate assistant in UAB Student Housing and Residence Life, created a series of short training videos entirely in Spanish to familiarize cleaning crews contracted for the World Games with UAB’s processes and protocols — ensuring UAB puts its best foot forward while on the world stage.

From July 7-17, nearly 20 units from across the enterprise will host tailored, hands-on activities for visitors to the new World Games Plaza, located at Birmingham’s new City Walk BHAM near Protective Stadium and the Uptown district. The activities will highlight the best of what UAB has to offer — whether that’s in the classroom, the lab, the clinic or the conference room.

Earlier this year, UAB was recognized as one of just 13 institutions ranked as national leaders in racial and gender diversity in leadership. We asked 12 women senior leaders to answer one question: What advice would you give a young woman who aspires to a career like the one you've achieved? Read their answers.

Alumna Shreya Malhotra was named among the fifth cohort of Stanford University’s Knight-Hennessy Scholars, the largest fully endowed graduate fellowship in the world; Malhotra graduated in 2020 with a bachelor’s in neuroscience and a master's in public health as part of the Science and Technology Honors Program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID Data Tracker, Jefferson County is now in the yellow category (medium community level). UAB public health and infectious disease experts continue to support the university’s mask-optional policy in non-clinical buildings due to several factors, including low hospitalization numbers, the UAB community's high vaccination rate compared to the community at large, and the wide availability and effectiveness of COVID vaccines and treatments.

“Understanding Your UAB Fiscal Responsibility,” which is focused on the role employees play in managing UAB’s financial resources, will be assigned to certain employees based on job function through the UAB Learning System beginning mid-May.
