University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking cigarette smokers who would like to quit smoking for participation in a scientific research study. The research study involves free counseling and treatment provided in a comfortable, supportive setting. The study may involve ingestion of psilocybin, a psychoactive substance found in psychedelic mushrooms that have been used as a sacrament in various cultures. Some research studies have suggested that psychedelics, when administered under interpersonally supportive and well-prepared conditions, may be effective in helping people overcome addictions.

Questionnaires, interviews, and biological measures of smoking will be used to assess the treatment's effects on mood and smoking. Participants will be compensated $50 per session. If you would like to discuss the possibility of volunteering, please call 205-996-1198, or go to www.quitsmokingbaltimore.org for more information about the study and to complete the online study prescreener for the UAB site. Confidentiality will be maintained for all applicants and participants.

Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older, and must live within travel distance of the study site in Birmingham.

CURB-2 is an abbreviation we use to refer to this study because there was a similar study completed and published in 2016 called CURB, which stands for Cocaine Use Reduction with Buprenorphine. The results from that study showed that using injectable naltrexone and sublingual buprenorphine was beneficial to participants on high doses of the medication. This study will give injectable naltrexone and injectable buprenorphine to make sure medication doses are consistent to confirm potential benefits.

There are no approved treatments specifically for cocaine use disorder. We are looking for adults (18-65 years of age) who are using cocaine and who are interested in reducing or stopping their use. The purpose of our study is to test a combination of two medications for 2 months as a possible treatment for cocaine use disorder.

This study includes the use of a placebo, which looks like the medication we are testing but does not include any active medicine. Study medication and assessments will be provided to participants at no cost. Participants will receive compensation for their time and efforts.

Study information will be kept strictly confidential. Your privacy is important to us.

Do you identify as an individual living with cancer and part of the LGBTQIA+ community or a care partner of someone in this community? A research lab at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is looking to learn about the day-to-day experiences of LGBTQIA+ cancer survivors and their care partners. We are interested in how individuals manage difficult situations related to their respective roles in their relationships. Individuals living with cancer often encounter stressful situations that can impact their mood and any additional stressors from living as a sexual or gender minority with a lack of resources adds an increased risk of experiencing stressful situations. The goal of this work is to develop resources that better support the well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals living with cancer and their care partners. This study will take place FULLY online with completion of daily surveys. All participants will be compensated. To learn more about our study contact us at starlab@uab.edu

Do you have a loved one with agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia? Is their agitation becoming overwhelming? Examples of some easily identifiable agitated behaviors are: restlessness, screaming, shouting, throwing things, resistiveness, constant unwarranted requests for attention or help, pacing/aimless wandering, kicking, hitting others or self, pushing people, hurting self or others, tearing things or destroying property. In this study, researchers want to find out if an investigational drug called AVP-786 is safe and effective (useful) in managing agitation in adults with Alzheimer’s dementia, when compared to a placebo. We are looking for adults between 21-55 years old and diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and use stimulant medication to participate in our study. We want to determine the role of ADHD stimulant medication on balance and other factors, such as physical activity in improving balance performance. We hypothesize that ADHD will improve balance performance in adults with ADHD. We also hypothesize that moderate to vigorous physical activity behaviors will positively influence balance performance in this population. Participants will be required to make two visits. Once on-medication; and on the second visit, we will ask participants to forgo ADHD medication 24 hours before the testing.
