If you are 18 or older with a BMI of 35 or greater, a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, and are desiring to lose weight, you may be eligible to participate in a research study. The goal of this study is to better understand calcium oxalate kidney stone disease and how weight loss might impact urinary oxalate and kidney stone risk. The study requires eating a study diet for 5 days with a one-day long visit both before and after weight loss, participating in a 14-week long weight loss program with the aid of Optifast VLCD® shakes, collecting 24-hr urines, blood samples, and stool samples. Participants will have the opportunity to be compensated up to $920 for participation in the program over the 6 -8-month participation time frame. Gastric bypass surgery may increase the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones and having a bacterium in our intestines that degrade oxalate may reduce the risk of forming kidney stones. For this study, adult Volunteers ages 18-75 are needed to examine whether or not individuals with a history of bariatric surgery can be successfully colonized with Oxalobacter formigenes, a normal gut oxalate degrading bacterium, and if colonization results in a decrease in urinary oxalate excretion. This study involves consuming prepared meals of your choice over 2 days twice, a one-hour long visit to the Clinical Research Enterprise (CRE) and providing stool and urine samples. Heterosexual sexually active women ages 18-45 needed for study exploring how bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common vaginal infection, occurs in women. If eligible, the study involves an anonymous survey, STD testing, and completion of twice-daily sexual/reproductive diaries, and self-collection of 3 twice daily vaginal swabs over an 8 week time period.
