Healthcare ManagementThe Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management at UAB will prepare you to make a difference in the health care delivery process. Our program will provide you vital industry knowledge and job skills that are critical to work as a mid-level manager in all types of health care organizations.

With four tracks available through traditional (on-campus), online, and blended (online and on-campus) offerings you are sure to find the program best for your interests and needs. Our tracks include specializations in Clinical Manager, General Manager, Pre-Professional, and Long-Term Care Administration. Admissions Requirements

Program Admission from High School:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school with a grade point average of a 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for admission to the General Manager track. A grade point average of a 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required for the Pre-Professional Track and Long Term Care Administrator Track. A grade point average of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required for the, and Occupational Therapy Fast-Track.
  • Achieved an ACT Composite Score of 21 or higher
  • Must meet all UAB undergraduate admission and academic requirements

Program Admission from Community College or University, including UAB:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school
  • Must meet all UAB undergraduate admission and academic requirements
  • Must hold a minimum 2.50 Overall GPA and 2.00 UAB institutional GPA, if applicable, prior to enrollment in any Health Care Management program courses
  • Must hold a 2.5 or higher Overall GPA on a 4.0 scale for admission to the General Manager track or Clinical Manager track. A grade point average of a 2.75 or higher Overall GPA on a 4.0 scale is required for the Pre-Professional Track, Long Term Care Administrator Track, and Occupational Therapy Fast-Track.

Completion of Core Requirements:

  • Must complete all Area I-IV requirements (with no grade lower than C) prior to enrollment in any 300-level Health Care Management courses.

Other Overall Health Care Management Program Requirements:

  • Grades of D will not count toward graduation for any Area I-IV or HCM professional curriculum requirements.
  • All courses in the Health Care Management professional curriculum must be completed prior to enrollment in the required AHS 481 or AHS 483 Management Internship.
  • Students must have a 2.50 Overall GPA and 2.00 UAB institutional GPA to enroll in AHS 481 or AHS 483.
  • A minimum 2.50 Overall GPA and 2.00 UAB institutional GPA is required prior to enrollment in any HCM courses and must be maintained to remain enrolled in the General Manager or Clinical Manager tracks of the Health Care Management program.
  • A minimum 2.75 Overall GPA and 2.00 UAB institutional GPA must be maintained to remain enrolled in the Pre-Professional and Long Term Care tracks of the Health Care Management program. A student may transfer to the General Manager track if qualifications for the track are met.

All Track Requirements (Other Than B.S. & M.S. Fast-Track)

  • Clinical Manager option — must be a graduate of a certificate and/or associate degree health professions program or the equivalent, including associate degree or diploma registered nursing program, and be licensed, registered, or certified in the health specialty (not required for the other tracks)
  • Clinical Manager or General Manager options — must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (A=4.0)
  • Pre-Professional or Long Term Care Administrator options — must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (A=4.0)
  • Minimum grade of C in all previous professional coursework to be applied to the degree
  • Minimum grade of C in all core curriculum coursework before enrollment in 400 level major courses
  • If accepted, complete the UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, provide proof of required immunizations, and receive satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service
  • If accepted, a background check and drug screening will be required at admission and prior to clinical placement

B.S. & M.S. Fast-Track Requirements

  • Freshman status
  • ACT score of 24 or above
  • High School or transfer GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Qualify for registration in EH 101 and MA 105 (or higher) at the point of freshman admission

Application Process

Applications are accepted at any time, and students may be enrolled during any term. To apply, complete the UAB undergraduate application and submit official transcripts from your high school and any college or university you have attended. You will also need to submit official ACT or SAT scores directly from ACT or College Board. If you are already enrolled at UAB in another major, complete a "Change of School/Major" request using the online form available in BlazerNET.

After declaring the Health Care Management major, students must complete a program application form. This application includes a background check, drug screen, and health-related information required for entry into internship experiences. The application for program admission must be completed prior to enrollment in the Health Care Management program.
