School of Health Professions has partnered with the Interaction Advisory Group to provide curriculum and training to help public service officers — law enforcement, first responders, educators and more — interact safely and effectively with people who have special needs.

NSF approves UAB Center for Health Organization Transformation
University of Alabama at Birmingham has been approved by the National Science Foundation as an official site for a Center for Health Organization Transformation. UAB was one of only two universities selected for 2016 and is one of only six CHOT University Sites in the United States.

The Albin donates Gossman thesis to UAB PT
UAB School of Medicine, presented his copy of a Master’s Thesis, submitted by a young Marilyn Gossman, to the UAB Department of Physical Therapy as a historical archive. Albin was Gossman’s thesis Chair when she was a student at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio in 1965, when Albin was an assistant professor at the same institution.

Maurice S. Albin, M.D., professor of anesthesiology in the UAB PT leads way in promoting national program on health for people with disabilities
University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Physical Therapy is the first in the state of Alabama to launch the national I Can Do It, You Can Do It (ICDI) program for health promotion for individuals with disabilities. The PT program, housed in the UAB School of Health Professions, has partnered with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition per the recommendation and encouragement of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Student Assembly.

PT program celebrates 50 years
UAB Physical Therapy program, which began in 1964, graduated the first class of baccalaureate degrees in 1967 before there was a University of Alabama at Birmingham.
On Saturday, May 17, 2014, the School of Health Professions celebrated the UAB PT program's 50th anniversary with a dinner and reception at The Club in Birmingham. In addition to alumni from nearly every class of graduates, many of the founding members were in attendance including Joan Bergman, the first physical therapist hired by University Hospital, who initiated the UAB PT program.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Physical Therapy selects Anthony Delitto, Ph.D., PT, FAPTA, as the inaugural lecturer for the Marilyn R. Gossman Endowed Lectureship. Delitto, associate dean for research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, is recognized around the world for his accomplishments and contributions to the PT profession.

The UAB program uses Standardized Patients, Simulators to prepare Genetic Counseling students
Delivering the news is a second-year graduate student in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Genetic Counseling Program. This is the first time the student will have the opportunity to deliver this type of abnormal test result during her training as a genetic counselor.
Fortunately for all involved, this is a simulation session where the mother is a standardized patient and the baby is a high-fidelity mannequin. The session provides the genetic counseling class members the opportunity to deliver difficult and complex genetic test information in a realistic, yet supervised environment. Unfortunately, this will not be the last time any of them deliver bad news. Read more

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) celebrated the new addition to the School of Health Professions Building. Richard Margison, UAB vice president financial affairs and administration, Suzanne Austin, UAB vice provost for student and faculty success and Eric Jack, Ph.D., dean of the Collat School of Business, joined the school Dean Dr. Harold P. Jones in a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside of the building located at 1705 University Blvd.

On Friday, Oct. 11, the Physician Assistant program offering three options for workforce needs
Because of the Affordable Care Act, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Physician Assistant Studies (PA) degree program is adding options for students to better prepare them for workforce needs. Currently, all graduates from the PA program can be employed in any setting; however, the program has a history of adding additional courses and clinical rotations in surgery, allowing students to be better prepared for surgical subspecialty when they graduate. Now the students will have the option to obtain additional clinical rotations in trauma or primary care.

HSA graduates first Executive Doctoral class Dec. 15
John McWhorter has a lot on his plate. He’s the president of Baylor University Medical Center and Senior Vice President Hospital Division at Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, Texas. He’s responsible for $2.7 billion in revenues for 18 hospitals and more than 12,000 employees. He’s a family man whose mission works have led him to Africa, Belize, Honduras and Mexico.
It would seem that McWhorter has little time for anything else. In just over three years, he has managed to squeeze in a doctoral degree. On December 15, 2012, McWhorter will be one of eight people graduating from the first class of the Executive Doctor of Science Degree in Administration-Health Services from the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
