  • With so many exciting ways to get involved, you may be wondering where to start. The UAB Pathfinders are here to help!

The UAB Pathfinders serve as a resource for any student or student organization seeking assistance in finding opportunities for campus engagement. The Pathfinders provide one-on-one consultations with students as well as workshops for larger groups. They additionally support student organizations as primary resources for Engage support and other RSO benefits. • How do I get involved with an RSO?

Students interested in learning more about membership in an RSO should first check out ENGAGE to see a full list of organizations, organized by category! ENGAGE is a great tool for not only connecting with organizations but also learning about exciting campus events.

How do I start an organization?

First, make sure there is not another organization already existing which provides the same purpose. We can help connect you with existing organizations by setting up an appointment to meet with a UAB Pathfinder. UAB Pathfinders also guide students on the registration requirements. Pathfinders exist to support registered student organizations and assist students seeking involvement opportunity with the necessary resources to get involved. Students interested in creating a new organization may do so during the New Organization Registration periods. There are two New Organization Registration periods each year. These are the only times when new organizations will be considered for registration.

    Registration Period 1: August 27 - September 30, 2018

Can I start an interest group before registering a new organization?

Prospective organizations must submit an Interest Group Registration form to notify the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership that the interest group will begin to recruit members with the intent of registering the organization. Once the form has been approved by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, the interest group will have access to the certain privileges for the remainder of the semester in which the form is filed. Interest Group Registration will only be considered if filed by a current UAB student.

After one semester of promoting the interest group, interest groups should complete the New Organization Registration process. Interest groups who do not meet the minimum requirements for New Organization Registration will lose recognition as an interest group; additionally, the group will be asked to meet with the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership for an interest group consultation. Interest Group Registration forms may be filed once per academic year. Interest Group registration forms are available from August 27 - September 30 and from January 1 - January 30.
