Welcome to UAB! Onboarding new employees in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham occurs over a year. The phases are as follows:
Onboarding Phases
- Preparation: Before the first day
- Acclimation: 1-30 days
- Belonging: 30-90 days
- Performance: 90-365 days
The Division of Student Affairs Onboarding Experience is designed to make your transition positive and successful. We’re committed to supporting an environment that allows all Student Affairs staff members to get acclimated, enjoy their work, and perform at their best.

Before you start
Please review the task below to get a head start on the actions required for your onboarding. As a new hire, you can do a few things before you start in the Division of Student Affairs.
- Complete New Staff Form
- Schedule a Professional Headshot
- Review the Division of Student Affairs Strategic Plan

Your First Day & Beyond!
Day 1 to Day 30
- Attend Discover UAB: New Employee Orientation
- Attend Department Orientation
- Complete “Discover the UAB Division of Student Affairs” Online Experience Department Modules
- Go to lunch with department staff
- MANDATORY: Complete Kognito Training.
- Discussion task, outline responsibilities, work hours/punctuality, time off & leave of absence and UAB designated holidays, attire, and assigned SMART short-term goals with supervisor
- Complete the required training on LMS by the end of the next week.
- Review the UAB Purchasing Card (P-Card) Program.
- Review the Employee Travel Information.
- Schedule a 1-on-1 with Dr. Jones, VPSA, by contacting

- Review the organizational chart for the Division of Student Affairs.
- Check out the UAB Student Affairs Annual Report
- Complete the Cultural Awareness Building Blocks: Part 1 (Video) (Log in with BlazerID and password)

Day 30 to Day 90
- Check out UAB Traditions
- Check-in with Supervisor on SMART short-term goals status.
- Evaluate familiarity with “Division Excellence in Action.”
- Review the Blazer Way.
- Begin formulating SMART long-term goals.
- Browse Financial Wellness and Employee Wellness Programs that fit you.

Enjoy your time here!
- Explore 50 things to do at UAB
- Top places to eat in Birmingham
- Schedule, a Six-Month Performance Review, discusses and reviews goals, and achievements.
- Successfully complete the Six-Month probationary period.
- Complete assigned course offered through Lynda/LinkedIn Learning
- Complete designated workshops offered through Learning & Development
- Meet at a 3-month and 6-month work anniversary to engage in mutual reflection.

The Division of Student Affairs Reality Experience
A day experience designed to introduce new staff to each other and to experience the Division of Student Affairs as a whole. Topics include history and culture of Student Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, current strategic initiatives, the scope of services offered, networking opportunities, and a tour of hotspots.
