About the Program

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, communicate, and make decisions. Developers and users must grapple with the societal implications, both positive and negative. Offered by the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate Certificate in Ethical Dimensions of Artificial Intelligence explores AI’s ethical issues in professional and public spheres. Students develop critical thinking skills, moral frameworks, and philosophical foundations to guide the responsible development and use of AI technologies.

The 15-hour curriculum includes courses on moral theory, logic, scientific reasoning, and theories of consciousness and agency. Students learn to consider real-world issues in AI research, such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, trust in social networks, alignment with human values, and accountability for errors. Designed for professionals in fields like medicine, computer science, engineering, and philosophy, the certificate program helps prepare graduates to assess ethical challenges and propose reasoned solutions for AI in research, healthcare, education, and beyond. This graduate certificate can be combined with AI-related graduate certificates to create a master’s degree in UAB’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies program.
