About the Program

In public health, your goal is to help create an environment so that people in a community stay healthy and thrive. At UAB, we can give you the data analysis, management, teaching, and other skills necessary for a career in public health leadership or academics.

In fact, our program is so comprehensive, you may take up to seven years to complete it. Each concentration requires prerequisite courses as well as a specialized curriculum that will sharpen your knowledge of your area of interest. For example, in health care organization and policy, you'll dive into law, policy development, and management as it relates to public health. If you concentrate on maternal and child health policy, however, we'll focus on training you to develop policy and advocate for the needs of women and children. On the other hand, with a focus on outcomes research, you'll study the aspects of clinical decision-making and cost/utility analysis. And finally, we've added a brand new option in case you're interested in research design and techniques—biostatistics. It provides a balance between the application of biostatistics and public health theory and management.
