Scholars Symposium is a highly anticipated annual event dedicated to showcasing the cutting-edge interdisciplinary bench and clinical research of our talented students -- who take center stage.
Within our five clusters of scientific expertise, our symposium offers a unique opportunity discuss a broad range of topics associated with the methods and outcomes of oral health, dental, and craniofacial research. A nationally recognized expert is invited as the keynote speaker. But that's not all - this event also fosters collaboration and networking between our school and others across campus, including UAB's interdisciplinary centers.
Scholars Symposium is the ultimate research hub!
Want to showcase your research?
Research presented is the work of students -- dental and graduate students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, and college students -- completed during their enrollment at UAB.
A Call for Abstracts is distributed each December and contains information about participation. Details are also posted on the school’s Scholars Symposium site on Sharepoint (login required).
Students initiate the process by submitting abstracts according to event guidelines. Once approved, each participant prepares a poster describing the background, objectives, results, and conclusions of their research project. Judges, who are members of the UAB research community, review the presentations. Awards are given in basic science, clinical science, table clinic, and scholarly activity categories.
Join us at our next symposium. We can't wait to see you there!
Second Annual Dr. Perng-Ru Liu Memorial Lecture coming in 2024
Dr. Perng-Ru Liu provided leadership in prosthodontics and comprehensive dentistry at the UAB School of Dentistry for more than thirty years. Committed to continuing dental education and lifelong learning, he finished out each CE year by providing multiple educational opportunities for both dentists and dental hygienists.
In recognition of his eternal service to the School of Dentistry and the many lives – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – he touched, UAB Continuing Dental Education has established this annual lecture dedicated to the memory of Dr. Liu.
The second annual Dr. Perng-Ru Liu Memorial Lecture will be held in the fall 2024. Watch for details to come.
About Dr. Liu
Dr. Perng-Ru Liu received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Chung-Shan Medical University in Taiwan in 1985. He joined UAB as a clinical instructor in Restorative Dentistry in 1990, then received his Master of Science in Dental Materials from UAB in 1992 and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1999. He was the founding chair for the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry (2000-09), and also chaired the Department of Prosthodontics (2009-12) and the Department of Restorative Sciences (2012-19). In 2014, Liu was named the inaugural holder of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting Endowed Professorship in Comprehensive Dentistry. He was appointed Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs in 2020, a position he held until his passing in November 2022.
18th Annual Hygiene Symposium is coming in 2024!
The 18th Annual Dental Hygiene Symposium and Hinman Lectures is scheduled for August 2024. Held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham - The Wynfrey Hotel, the two-day program is for hygienists, assistants, office managers, and dentists.
