Explore UAB

Through the Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Program (ABM) in Multidisciplinary Biomedical Science, an undergraduate student can take courses that count simultaneously toward their undergraduate and graduate programs. Once admitted, an ABM student can take up to 12 hours of approved 500/600-level graduate courses that will count toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Upon completion, students enter the job market with an increased earning potential and set themselves apart as candidates with high-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

How it Works

Our program offers two tracks: a 45-hour Thesis track and a 30-hour Non-Thesis track

Plan I Thesis (45 hours)

Curriculum

Semester Hours

MBS 601: Molecular and Cell Biology (Fall) 4
MBS 602: Biochemistry and Cell Biology (Spring) 4
MBS 603: General Human Physiology (Summer) 4
MBS 697: Colloquium 3 (three semesters, 1 hour each)
MBS 698: Non-Thesis Research 9-12 (pre-candidacy)
MBS 699: Thesis Research 3-6 (post-candidacy)
GRD 617: Critical Thinking and Scientific Integrity 3

Prerequisites

  • 3.5 GPA
  • 60 Credit Hours; 36 Credit Hours completed at UAB
  • BY 123 and lab, BY 124 and lab, CH 235 and lab, CH 237 and lab with a C or better
  • Encouraged but not required: Biochemistry; Cell Biology; Genetics; Molecular Biology; Physiology. Please note: ABM students wishing to start MBS in the summer semester would benefit from prior completion of undergraduate coursework in cell biology and/or biochemistry in preparation for MBS 603 (Human Physiology).

Application Process

Prior to applying, prospective students must create a plan of study and fill out an ABM form listing shared credits between both degrees. Prospective students must then meet with their undergraduate advisor and the MSMBS Program Director together to review the plan of study and sign the ABM form. Once you have created your plan of study, please contact msmbs@uab.edu to schedule this meeting.
