Residency Recruitment Committee

In the past, residency interviews involved traveling across the country from program to program looking for an ideal fit. Now that interviews are virtual, things are different for everyone involved.

As much as we wish you could be with us in person, COVID has forced us to make many changes and we will be continuing virtual interviews this season. As UAB’s recruitment directors, our goal is to recreate the in-person experience as much as possible and provide you with the information needed to make your decision on where you would like to complete residency training. As you look for that special place where you will spend your next four years, we hope to show you how amazing UAB is and why we love Birmingham so much!

UAB is an exceptional place to train for many reasons. UAB Hospital is Alabama’s only ACS Level 1 trauma center and is the major tertiary care hospital both for the state of Alabama and the greater region. As a resident within the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UAB, you will have the opportunity to train at a busy, high-acuity academic medical center that provides broad exposure to surgical subspecialties, multiple intensive care units, a high volume of regional and pain procedures, and one of the busiest labor and delivery units in the region. You will be exposed to diverse and complex patient populations and have access to tools and techniques at the cutting edge of anesthesia care. You will be working alongisde highly motivated co-residents and faculty from across the country and the globe. Along with this robust clinical exposure, the residency program provides a thorough non-clinical educational experience through didactics, conferences, case simulations, ample educational and conference funding, access to research, and simultaneous degree tracks. While many of our graduates go on to pursue competitive fellowship positions, after four years at UAB you will have the skills needed to be a standout anesthesiologist anywhere in the country. Our goal is to produce tomorrow’s leaders in the field of anesthesiology.

While our clinical and educational experience is second to none, we feel that the department’s emphasis on life outside the hospital sets us apart from other major academic medical centers across the country. Resident wellness and work-life balance are areas in which the program excels. The city of Birmingham provides ample opportunities for recreation, no matter your interests. Birmingham and the surrounding area boast spectacular outdoor opportunities with ample hiking trails, mountain biking trails, state parks, lakes, botanical gardens, and more. Birmingham also has great breweries, some of the best restaurants in the nation, professional sporting events, major headliner concerts, and even Broadway shows. With a weekend off, we have close proximity to the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, the Appalachian Mountains, and more. As UAB residents we have no problem taking advantage of our time off.

We are so excited that you are interested in our residency program. We look forward to helping show you why we think UAB is an amazing place to train and why we love to call Birmingham our home.
