REDCap - A Basic Intro
REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure, web application designed to support data capture for research studies, providing user-friendly web-based case report forms, real-time data entry validation (e.g. for data types and range checks), audit trails and a de-identified data export mechanism to common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R/S-Plus). REDCap also provides a powerful tool for building and managing online surveys. The research team can create and design surveys in a web browser and engage potential respondents using a variety of notification methods. REDCap data collection projects rely on a thorough study-specific data dictionary defined in an iterative self-documenting process by all members of the research team with planning assistance from the system owner. The iterative development and testing process results in a well-planned data collection strategy for individual studies. REDCap provides a secure, web-based application that is flexible enough to be used for a variety of types of research, provide an intuitive interface for users to enter data and have real time validation rules at the time of entry. The system was developed at Vanderbilt University but is now part of an international and multi-institutional consortium which includes The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). REDCap has been disseminated for use locally at other institutions and currently supports 4296 academic/non-profit consortium partners in 137 countries on six continents and over 927K projects with 1.3M research end-users, 10,357 articles utilizing REDCap have been published. REDCap at DOM IT
REDCap is one of our core competencies and we have been serving the UAB community for few years. However, the service has propelled exponentially in the last couple of years primarily because of a) positive changes in all aspects of this service offering, b) our undertaking of diverse and complex projects, c) cost effectiveness, and d) due to great word of mouth. To provide a trustworthy service, we have invested in two brand new datacenters utilizing state-of-the-art server and technologies, added staff, completely revamped our operation which is centered around security, and streamlined processes to offer the most cost effective solution at UAB. We are also the only REDCap instance at UAB that’s been vetted by all approving authorities (i.e. IRB, Data Security Office, CTO, CIO, VP/FISMA Signatory Authority) that ultimately yielded the Authorization To Operation (ATO) by NIH. This is a significant achievement that shows our commitment to REDCap. To achieve that, we have done few iterations of comprehensive risk assessment and modeled our operation after federal agency NIST’s 800-53 rev 4/800-171 standards. As part of our commitment to this service, we review and update our documentation to match our most recent configuration. We also submit our updated documentations annually to NIH for their input and continued authorization. Our pioneering work has been a model for other reputable institutions and was recognized at leading conferences. For an example, we have won the 3rd place at the peer-reviewed poster presentation at the Annual REDCap Conference 2016. Our most recent endeavor is to make REDCap officially FDA (21CFRpart11) compliant, which we have just completed with the collaboration of an external validating company.

We are experienced in the advanced features of REDCap including: multi-site, DAG, double data entry, scheduling, branching logic, randomization, calculated fields, reports. We can also offer assistance with project migration from other heterogeneous sources. We now host over 700 REDCap projects, many of which are federally funded.

Because, we are a self-funded IT service provider and a Service Center, there is a nominal charge for this server. Please contact us or refer to the SLA in the REDCap FAQ page for details of our cost structure.

To learn more about your service, please visit the REDCap FAQ page for Service Level Agreement (terms and conditions and cost structure), IRB Boilerplate text, Letter of Support (LOS), and project request form.
