Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) received the 2019 President’s Diversity Champion Award for her research with community engagement to better understand and address social determinants of minority health and health disparities. She also serves on multiple university committees focused on equity, diversity and inclusion. She is part of the inaugural cohort of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leaders Program, and she chairs both the Jefferson County Collaborative for Health Equity and the new Jefferson County Health Action Partnership. More Good News for February 27, 2019
Derek Russell, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) and Swati Gulati, MD (Instructor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) published their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine on bag-mask ventilation during tracheal intubation of critically ill patients. Their results suggest that for every nine critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, providing bag-mask ventilation between induction and laryngoscopy would prevent severe hypoxemia in one patient.
Congratulations to the General Internal Medicine faculty and residents who participated in the Southern Society of General Internal Medicine annual meeting. Starr Steinhilber, MD, MPH (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) brought home the Clinician-Educator Award and was elected Secretary/Treasurer for the 2020-2021 term. Winter Williams, MD (General Internal Medicine) is the new Membership Chair for the 2019-2020 term. Seema Kumar, MD (PGY-2, Internal Medicine Resident) won second place in the poster contest.
UAB Medicine has partnered with WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, an organization dedicated to heart disease education and patient support. The collaboration led UAB Women's Heart Health Clinic Director Salpy Pamboukian, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) to nominate two extraordinary patients as UAB WomenHeart Champions to become community advocates for heart health. Craig Hoesley, MD (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and Faye Heard (Program Manager II, Infectious Diseases) are the site investigator and study coordinator for the Alabama Microbicide Clinical Research Site, a member of the NIH-funded Microbicide Trials Network. At the recent annual meeting, they received special recognition for the implementation and completion of multiple complex Phase 1 clinical trials assessing candidate microbicide compounds which aim to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV. Keep up the great work!
Nirav Patel, MD (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) and Pankaj Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) published their findings in the American Journal of Cardiology on the relation of severe sepsis and cardiovascular events. Utilizing big data from the New York State Inpatient Database, they were able to summarize the incidence of cardiovascular disease and hospital deaths among patients with severe sepsis. They found nearly one-third of patients admitted with severe sepsis develop cardiovascular disease.
Alayne Markland, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) was named Best Reviewer in 2018 by the Journal of Urology for her dedicated service and timely reviews of manuscripts on female urology, incontinence and urodynamics/neurourology. Good job, Dr. Markland!
Dominik Kentrup, PhD (Instructor, Nephrology) joined UAB in January 2019 and specializes in basic and translational research in nephrology. His current work aims to analyze the role of endocrine-acting fibroblast growth factors in the pathophysiology of kidney and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Kentrup is also a trained microsurgeon proficient in several surgical and non-surgical animal models of renal injury, including transplantation. Welcome, Dr. Kentrup!
