The clinic opened last week, just in time for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The lead physicians—including DOM’s Grant Williams, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) and Nipun Reddy, MD (Assistant Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology)—all participated in a Facebook Live event discussing prevention and treatment, and how patients now have access to colorectal cancer care in a “one-stop shop.” Catch up on their social media interview.

The National Research Mentoring Network recently profiled Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine). The interview features her insights on the importance of mentoring, as well as a video health talk on Community-Based Participatory Research.
Isabel Scarinci, PhD, MPH (Professor, Preventive Medicine), William Carroll, MD (Chair, Department of Otolaryngology), and Young-il Kim, PhD (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) were awarded an R21 from the National Cancer Institute to develop and examine feasibility of a scalable tobacco cessation intervention tailored to rural young adult African American men.
DOM researchers report antifungal microbial stewardship appears key in reducing echinocandin resistance in Candida species. Todd McCarty, MD (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) and Joanna Zurko, MD (PGY-3) originally presented the research at IDWeek, and have now been published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. ID Professor Pete Pappas, MD, is senior author on the paper.
Two fellows in Cardiovascular Disease, Navkaranbir Bajaj, MD, MPH, and Nirav Patel, MD, were recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Their NTproBNP guided adjustment of heart failure therapy in patients with reduced ejection fraction led to a 20% reduction in all-cause mortality as compared to standard adjustment. Serial monitoring of NTproBNP is a precision medicine approach to tailor heart failure medications. Mentor Pankaj Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) is senior author on the paper.
