More Good News for January 10, 2018

Navin C. Nanda, MD (Distinguished Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was honored by the Bangladesh Cardiac Society as the “Father of Echocardiography” for his outstanding contribution to modern echocardiography at their annual meeting held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in December. The award was given by the Honorable Mohammed Nasim, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Congratulations to UAB Medicine Resident Seema Kumar, MD (PGY-1) for receiving the C. Glenn Cobbs Book Award for best write-ups at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.

Thanks to data reported by Bernard Camins, MD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) protective gowns are no longer required for MRSA isolation, saving UAB Medicine both time and money. While gowns will continue to be required in the nursery, the Department is ecstatic acout this policy change!

Congratulations to Hussein Abu Daya, MD, a second-year fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, who was selected for the Leadership Training Program of the American College of Cardiology, a highly prestigious and competitive two-year program.

The second annual SOM Diversity Fair will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018, 4–6pm in North Pavilion. Each division is asked to join the celebration and compete for best cultural cuisine! Contact Kristi Justice (kboggan@uabmc.edu) for details.

If you have been missing an opportunity to connect with fellow faculty and trainees in the Department, we’ve got great news. The DOM Women in Medicine group is re-starting quarterly meetings. Our first meeting will be held at 4pm on Thursday, February 1, in Boshell Building #334. Our topic will be “Confronting Bias in the Workplace.” All women in medicine—MDs, PhDs, trainees—are invited.

The Department of Medicine’s Trainee Research Symposium is annually held on the first Wednesday in March. Last year, we had over 100 posters submitted! The deadline for entries is Tuesday, January 16, so talk to your mentors and submit your abstract online. Prizes are awarded in four categories: Fellow, Resident, Post-doc, and Grad Student.

Coming next week, Medical Grand Rounds will feature Stefan Kertesz, MD, MSc (Professor, UAB Division of Preventive Medicine, and Director, Homeless Patient-Aligned Care Team, BVAMC). Kertesz will present, “Prescription Control: When the Correction Goes Too Far,” at noon on Wednesday, January 17, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
