The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, led by Program Director Sheetal Gandotra (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will add four new fellows to its training program—two in 2022 and two in 2023. The program launched July 2021 with a mission to train physicians in the field of critical care with competence in procedures such as airway management, paracentesis, basic bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy and arterial access. Training for this program is one year for trainees entering after the completion of a subspecialty and two years for those entering after residency. Recruitment is currently underway. Way to grow, team!

More Good News for October 15, 2021

Vibhu Parcha, M.D., (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) led a study that found nearly 40 percent of young adults without diabetes experience insulin resistance. The finding suggests that identifying insulin resistance early could help prevent this group from developing diabetes and experiencing fatal cardiovascular events.

Jim J. Cimino, M.D., (Professor, General Internal Medicine) has been appointed to the National Library of Medicine Board of Regents. The board serves as the advisory body to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the NIH Director, and the Library Director on policy, as well as providing the final review for the NLM's extramural grant program.

We are delighted to welcome Sergio A. Sánchez-Luna, M.D., (Assistant Professor) a new Interventional Endoscopist in the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His clinical interest includes endoscopic surgery as applied to bariatric/metabolic endoscopy, postsurgical complications, and pancreaticobiliary diseases.

Peter Barnes, FRS, Professor of Thoracic Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute, and former Head of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College London, will present “Accelerated Lung Aging in COPD and Its Comorbidities” at noon on Wednesday, October 20, via Zoom.
