Steven Rowe, MD, MSPH (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has developed a minimally invasive tool for viewing differences in the nasal airways of cystic fibrosis patients. Thanks to a ten-year collaboration with pathologists at Massachusetts General Hospital, the new optical coherence tomography technology delivers high-resolution images of the hair-like structures that line nasal airways, as well as of the detailed features of the clearance of mucus which is impaired in people with CF. Congratulations on this tremendous breakthrough!

More Good News for August 7, 2019

Robert Welner, PhD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) and colleagues have been published in Cell Reports. Their findings on how bone marrow stromal cells differentiate into different types of fat, bone, and cartilage holds tremendous promise for understanding how bone and blood malignancies develop. Congratulations on this exciting gene profiling and validation work!

Thanks to a grant from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama, DOM cardiologists will be able to see patients remotely via telehealth technology in four counties—Butler, Wilcox, Bibb and Marengo. Gil Perry, MD, and Greg Chapman, MD, are hopeful that increasing access for our rural patients will help reduce adverse cardiovascular outcomes like stroke and hypertension. It is also an important step toward establishing a sustainable state-wide payment model for telehealth services. DOM rheumatologists will participate in the grant as well.

Professors David Pollock, PhD, and Orlando Gutierrez, MD (Nephrology) have landed an NIH RO1 grant to explore how the timing of high salt intake impacts the speed at which the kidney can eliminate such a salt load. They hope to ascertain whether sodium intake at different times of the day contributes to important measures of cardiovascular risk. Kudos to you both!

In this UAB MedCast, Rita Paschal, MD, discusses the causes, evaluation and management of iron deficient anemia. She explains which physical findings suggest iron deficiency and the latest treatment options available.

Chief among them are owning your success and reframing your competence. Hats off for addressing this important subject for all our faculty and trainees!
