DEAThe Department is thrilled to celebrate six of our faculty as winners of the 2017 SOM Dean’s Excellence Awards.

This year’s honorees are:

Raegan Durant, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) won for Diversity Enhancement, senior faculty.

Ken Saag, MD, MSc (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) won for Mentorship, senior faculty.

Surya Bhatt, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) won for Research, junior faculty.

Stefan Kertesz, MD, MSc (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) won for Service, senior faculty.

Marianthe Grammas, MD (Assistant Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) won for Service, junior faculty.

Eric Wallace, MD (Assistant Professor, Nephrology) also won for Service, junior faculty.


More Good News for May 24, 2017

Jennifer Trevor, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) and colleagues were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. They participated in a proof-of-principle trial that demonstrated KIT-dependent processes and mast cells contribute to the pathobiologic basis of severe asthma.

The Department recently received an incredible letter extoling the fine care that Andy Duxbury, MD (Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) provided for her 91-year-old mother, stating “no one has even come close to the professionalism, skill, talent, sensitivity, and caring nature we have found in Dr. Duxbury.” The Department salutes Dr. Duxbury, and the many more like him, who go out of their way to provide extraordinary care for all our patients.

James Cimino, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine) was elected to membership in a new honorary organization – the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, sponsored by the International Medical Informatics Association. He is one of 120 founding members from 38 countries world-wide.

The 7th Annual Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) Week celebrating excellence in medical education will be held September 13-15, 2017. If you’ve got a great idea for a workshop for fellows and faculty please submit to www.uab.edu/RIME by Friday, June 16.

Martin Heslin, MD, UAB Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Medical staff will present “Defending the Doc through Peer and Professional Review” at noon on Wednesday, May 31, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
