More Good News for December 13, 2017

The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program is pleased to announce another successful fellowship match. 100% of the 26 third-year residents who applied matched to a fellowship program, with 9 of them choosing to continue their training at UAB.

Cardiology Fellow Nav Bajaj, MD, and colleagues were recently published online in JAMA Cardiology. Their finding that natriuretic peptide deficiency is prevalent among blacks may explain why they are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease.

Andrea Cherrington, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) was as one of 11 experts to develop the American Diabetes Association’s 2018 clinical guidelines published this month in Diabetes Care; she served as Chair of the Behavioral Medicine Subcommittee.

Marc Cribbs, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was recently elected to a three-year term on the American College of Cardiology Adult Congenital & Pediatric Cardiology Leadership Council.

Tariq Hamid, PhD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) has received an RO1 grant from the NHLBI to study the role of inflammation in modulating Cardiac Mesenchymal Stem Cell (cMSC) function in chronic heart failure. Research will examine the combined therapeutic potential of cMSCs and pharmacological PDGFR inhibition to induce myocardial repair.

Carmen de Miguel, PhD (Instructor, Nephrology) is first author of an article highlighted in APS Select. Her research demonstrates that stress in early life may change the immune response in the kidneys, increasing the risk of heart disease later in life.

Alicia Farley (Administrative Associate, Cardiovascular Disease) was selected as DOM Employee of the Month for December. Alicia is a masterful coordinator, handling many important details in an environment where there’s little room for error. She’s also conscientious and kind, and really knows how to keep up morale. The Department is proud to celebrate employees like Alicia. Please think of others you know and nominate them for this award!

The deadline for the inaugural informatics abstract contest has been extended to Sunday, January 7, 2018. The first UAB i2b2 Abstract Contest will provide cash prizes for the best scientific abstract based on data from UAB’s i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) clinical data repository. The contest is co-sponsored by the UAB Informatics Institute and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the details are posted online.

The Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) program is pleased to announce a request for applications to the Faculty Development for Educators – Immersion Program. Faculty interested in pursuing advanced degrees or immersion programs in medical education could receive up to $7,500 in support of these goals. Deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Details and application instructions are posted online
