Friends and colleagues recently gathered to honor Dr. Stu Frank (Professor Emeritus and Executive Vice Chair in the Department of Medicine) at the naming dedication of the Stuart J. Frank, M.D., Conference Room in the Boshell Diabetes Building. Special guests including Dr. Anupam Agarwal, Dr. Seth Landefeld, Dr. Mike Mugavero, shared stories of Frank’s selfless leadership, mentorship, and his ability spread joy throughout his three-decade career at UAB.

Agarwal Assumes New Roles in the School of Medicine

On February 3, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees named Anupam Agarwal, M.D., as the new Dean of the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, Senior Vice President of Medicine and Chair of the Health Services Foundation Board.

Gastanadui Earns Trainee Research Award from SSCI

M. Gabriela Gastanadui, M.D., (PGY-3) was recognized for her research which investigates mechanisms of acute coronary syndrome utilizing spatial transcriptomics. She works under the mentorship of Dr. Greg Payne in the Division of CVD.

Chadha Receives K99 for Colo-rectal Cancer Research

ABIM Research Pathway fellow Awal Chadha, M.D., has earned an NIH K99 to continue his research under the mentorship of Dr. Casey Weaver which focuses on the crosstalk between myeloid cells and T helper 17 cells in tumor micro-environments.

Tucker Wins 2023 Heersink Professional Excellence Award

Rodney Tucker, M.D., (Professor & Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics, & Palliative Care) was recognized by the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion Faculty Association for career excellence in research, teaching, and service. Great work, Dr. Tucker!

RN Comforts Grieving Families with Special Keepsakes

Felicia Vaughn, a registered nurse in the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, started the "Heartbeat in a Bottle" program to support grieving families by gifting them with a printout a patients EKG and placing it in a keepsake bottle.

UAB Economic Impact Rises 163 Percent Since 2008

A new report shows that UAB’s annual economic impact in Alabama grew to $12.1 billion in 2022 — a 163 percent increase since 2008. Last year, the institution supported or sustained 107,6000 jobs in Alabama.
