In order to give pre-medical students an opportunity to safely observe physicians at work, DOM faculty have piloted a "teleshadowing" educational experience in select clinics. Initial feedback indicates that the students value the opportunity to participate in remote observation, and physicians find it easy to manage. Dr. Carmel McNicholas-Bevensee (Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology) notes that there are currently more than 60 students who have expressed interest in the program. She hopes to enlist more clinicians to meet this need.

More Good News for February 26, 2020

Two DOM faculty have received awards through the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer to support new preliminary cancer-related investigations. Laura Rogers, MD, MPH (Professor, Preventive Medicine) and Robert Welner, PhD (Assistant Professor, Hematology & Oncology) will use the awards to strengthen RO1 grant applications.

Karla Williams, MD (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) and colleagues have published a study demonstrating that internal medicine residents commonly experience race and gender-related aggressions by patients. They conclude that curricula are needed to equip trainees with tools to appropriately respond during such encounters.

William Geisler, MD, MPH (Professor, Infectious Diseases) will co-PI a newly funded R21 from NIAID. Their project will investigate epigenetic variations that modulate immune responses to chlamydia and influence chlamydia reinfection risk in African American women, in order to advance the development of targeted interventions, such as a vaccine.

DOM welcomes Douglas Dickinson, MD (Professor, Gastroenterology & Hepatology) to our faculty. Dr. Dickinson is familiar to many as an attending gastroenterologist at the Birmingham VAMC. Upon his retirement from that service, he now brings his wealth of experience as an endoscopist to our team.

Did you know this was America Saves Week? Dr. Well-Be is a huge fan of celebrating this often overlooked component of wellness. Tending our finances is perhaps more important now than ever before. One helpful strategy is to set up a Rainy Day Fund, starting with a small goal of $500 and building up to 3-6 months of expenses.
