Doug Morgan, MD, MPH named GI Division DirectorThe Department is delighted that Doug Morgan, MD, MPH, has joined UAB to serve as Director in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as of October 1. A global leader in gastric cancer and its prevention, Dr. Morgan comes from Vanderbilt where he was on faculty since 2011. He plans to advance the division’s clinical, educational and research programs as well as expand prevention and treatment of GI health globally. Welcome, Dr. Morgan!

More Good News for October 3, 2018

A talented group of physicians and researchers from the Division of Hematology and Oncology and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center presented multiple abstracts at the annual ASCO Quality meeting. These ranged from the impact of travel time on hospitalizations, to patient cost responsibility in cancer, to restructuring of inpatient rounds in oncology to improve patient's length of stay. Thanks to Devika Das, MD; Stacey Ingram; Soumya Niranjan; Gabrielle Rocque, MD; and Courtney Williams for making a terrific impression!

The Department of Medicine congratulates its seven newest professors of medicine, effective October 1, 2018. Ammar Almehmi, MD (Nephrology); Andrea Cherrington, MD, MPH (Preventive Medicine); Gareth Dutton, PhD (Preventive Medicine); Orlando Gutierrez, MD (Nephrology). Kevin Leon, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care); Michal Mrug, MD (Nephrology); and Turner Overton, MD (Infectious Diseases). Stay tuned for new Associate Professors next week.

Jennifer Pollock, PhD, (Professor, Nephrology), head of the Kidney Undergraduate Research Program (KURE) has just been granted a 5-year training award from the NIDDK that will allow Nephrology to continue leading the way in training undergraduate students in multiple aspects of kidney research and exposing them to numerous opportunities in academic research and medicine. Congratulations to Jennifer and her team!

Congratulations to our September Employee of the Month, Tatiana “Tanya” Brecht (Research Financial Administrator, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care). Tanya goes above and beyond in her job while assisting other employees with grant submissions, and provides an unprecedented level of organization that aids in the successful execution of the randomized controlled trials. Think of others you know, and nominate them for this distinction. 

Dr. Well-Be has been promoting wellness throughout the month of September by encouraging us all to #TakeTheStairs. He's even been training with everybody's favorite dragon to stay in top-step form! 

Stuart Frank, MD, (Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) won the Dean’s Excellence Award for Mentorship for senior faculty. See his video interview online.

  • Register now for the Southeastern Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care Summit November 1-2 at the Embassy Suites in Hoover. Experts in the field of palliative care from across the nation will address the specific issues of providing palliative care in the Southeast.
