The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center lobby has never smelled so good as it did on Friday afternoon at the first ever UAB Heersink School of Medicine Diversity Fair. Representatives from each department prepared dishes that showcased the various nationalities represented across the School. There were also special performances and art displays, creating an energetic and festive celebration of our cultural diversity. Department of Medicine flavors included Greek from Marianthe Grammas (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care), Peruvian from Gustavo Heudebert (General Internal Medicine), Indian from Beena Thannickal (Comprehensive Cancer Center), Croatian from Leah Leisch (General Internal Medicine), and Vietnamese from Leah’s husband, Giang Leisch.
Jack Hasson, MD (Clinical Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has received the American Thoracic Society 2017 Outstanding Clinician Award which recognizes devotion and excellence in the care of patients.
Steven Rowe, MD, MSPH (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) received an inaugural Emerging Investigator Award (R-35) from the NHLBI. This 7-year grant is for $6.5 million to explore diseases of mucus clearance, including their mechanistic basis, precision phenotypes, and new treatments targeting novel pathways.
Kathy Harrington, PhD, MPH (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has received a UAB SPARC Award. Her grant will fund a project to increase patient self-referrals to Tobacco Treatment Consult Service in collaboration with pediatrics physician Susan Walley, MD.
Ginnie Prater, MD (Fellow, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) was recognized by the Journal of Radiology Nursing with the 2016 Editor’s Award for her article “Osteoporosis and Imaging: The Big Picture.” She and co-authors Dale Tomlinson, DNP (Nurse Practitioner, Osteoporosis Clinic) and Sarah Morgan, MD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) found that early diagnosis of low bone mineral density and appropriate treatment can prevent future osteoporotic fractures in the aging population.
Kellie Flood, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has been invited to share her abstract on Virtual Acute Care for Elders (ACE)—an innovative care model that has been shown to improve elder care across the hospital—at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting.
Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) has been elected as a fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, a multidisciplinary organization of clinicians, educators, and scientists who study the interactions of behavior with biology and the environment in order to better understand and improve human health.
Anitra Baylor and Stephanie Carroll rallied more than three dozen members of the Division of Preventive Medicine to participate in the American Heart Association's 14th Annual National Wear Red Day on February 3 to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke in women. Make the time to Know Your Numbers—five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI).
