The New England Journal of Medicine recently published its collection of most notable articles of 2016, selecting “A Randomized Trial of Long-Term Oxygen for COPD with Moderate Desaturation” as one of the most meaningful in improving medical practice and patient care. The article was published in October by the Long-Term Oxygen Treatment Trial Research Group (LOTT), which was associated with four members of the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. William C. Bailey, MD, chaired the Steering Committee. He and Allen Cooper, MD, served on the writing committee; and Kathy Harrington, MD, and Mark Dransfield, MD, were key contributors to the LOTT study.
Carolina Salvador, MD (Hematology and Oncology) is leading a diverse group of clinical, behavioral, and other health professionals at the newly launched UAB Integrative Medicine Clinic. Their mission is to manage the myriad challenges of cancer journeys, from prevention to survivorship and beyond. The integrative approach encompasses all aspects of a person’s lifestyle, and optimizes care with evidence-based practices from both conventional and complementary health care perspectives.
Lufang Zhou, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease) has been selected as a Fellow of American Heart Association, Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, recognizing his work in mitochondrial dysfunction and heart disease.
Kah Yong Goh, a Graduate Biomedical Sciences doctoral trainee in the lab of Lufang Zhou, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease) has received the Histochemical Society-Sponsored Trainee Travel Award to attend the American Society for Investigative Pathology 2017 Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology.
Stephen Stuart, MD (PGY-1) was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The article, “The Importance of Framing” was presented as an exercise in clinical reasoning.
Brett Barlow, MD (PGY-1) won the C. Glenn Cobbs Book Award for best history and physical write-ups at the Birmingham VA Medical Center in December 2016.
