Explore UAB

Ganesh Halade, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease) Surya Bhatt, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) Kirk Habegger, PhD (Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism) and Chad Hunter, PhD (Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism) have all been named to the UAB Heersink School of Medicine 2017 class of James A. Pittman Jr., MD, Scholars, a program organized to recognize the contributions of junior faculty and support the recruitment and retention of highly competitive scientists and physician-scientists. The Pittman Scholars are named for the late James A. Pittman, MD, dean of the School of Medicine from 1973 to 1992, who is considered a principal architect of the School for his ability to recruit top scientists and physicians to UAB.

Three faculty members from Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine have received R35 grants from the NHLBI. These Outstanding/Emerging Investigator Awards are a new and unique funding mechanism designed to support research programs, rather than a single project, and to provide investigators increased freedom to conduct research that breaks new ground or extends previous discoveries in new directions. Congratulations to Gang Liu, MD, J. Edwin Blalock, PhD, and Steven Rowe, MD, MSPH, for earning these awards!

Our residents received a special delivery this week thanks to the generosity of program alumnus Sanjiv Chatterji, MD, PhD (1994-1997). His contribution to the IM Residency Excellence in Education Fund supported a cookie break for housestaff, a sweet surprise—literally—for those on ward service.

Surya Bhatt, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has been appointed to the editorial board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the flagship journal of the American Thoracic Society.

Susan Harding, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has been appointed by the ABIM to serve as Chair of the Sleep Medicine Self-Assessment Committee.

Ashwani Singal, MD (Gastroenterology and Hepatology) has been named Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology.
