Joshua Detelich, MD (PGY-2) organized a community outreach effort last week at the Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge. About 20 internal medicine and med-peds residents prepared a spaghetti supper and shared it with the residents—cancer patients and their families who are undergoing treatment far from home. #wellnessmatters
J. Edwin Blalock, PhD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) received one of 20 inaugural Outstanding Investigator Awards (R-35) given nationally by the NHLBI. This award is for $6.14 million and 7 years in duration to fund his pulmonary research program which will explore a newly discovered pathogenic entity. “Our newly described pathogenic exosome has proteases such as elalstase on its surface and can cause damage to extra-cellular matrix in the lung. These exosomes are in the lungs of COPD patients and likely play a key role in disease.”
Robert Centor, MD (Professor Emeritus and Founding Division Director of General Internal Medicine) recently won the Society of General Internal Medicine’s 2017 Robert J. Glaser Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research, education, leadership and mentoring in generalism in medicine.
Isabel Scarinci, PhD, MPH (Professor, Preventive Medicine) is co-principal investigator for the five-year, $16.6 million renewal grant from the National Cancer Institute for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Morehouse School of Medicine and Tuskegee University partnership to address cancer disparities among African-Americans. Marie Bakitas, DNSc, NP-C, FAAN (Associate Director, Center for Palliative and Supportive Care) recently earned the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Stronger Hearts™ Best Practice award for her project “ENABLE: Comprehensive Heartcare For Patients and Caregivers,” an intervention tailored to rural, older adults with advanced heart failure (HF), in reducing HF morbidity and improving patient and caregiver quality of life.
Gabrielle Rocque, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) was recently published in JAMA Oncology. “Resource Use and Medicare Costs During Lay Navigation for Geriatric Patients with Cancer” demonstrated that when older cancer patients were paired with trained nonmedical professionals in the form of ‘lay navigators,’ there was significant decline in health care resource utilization and Medicare costs. Marty Solomon, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology.
Kelly Adamson (Hematology and Oncology) is DOM Employee of the Month for January 2017! Kelly is responsible for coordination of the fellowship program in the division, and she is known for her incredible initiative, resourcefulness, and boundless good will. Dr. Lisle Nabell states, “Kelly really is the poster child for the model employee. She is a thoughtful person and always looks to move the needle to make us better, but never seeks compliments or grandstands.” A reception will be held in Kelly’s honor on February 9, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in North Pavilion 2532.
