Carlos Estrada, MD, MS (Director, General Internal Medicine) will begin the role of Associate Provost for Interprofessional Education and Director of the Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation (CIPES) on January 2, 2017. He takes the place of founding CIPES Director, Robert Rich, MD, who retires in December. CIPES is a multi-disciplinary entity where learners from the health schools and health-related programs enhance their educational experiences in an environment that models real-world practice.

UAB medical students vote for their favorite teachers each year, and the Department of Medicine was proud to have 16 faculty nominations across 8 categories for Argus Awards. Three outstanding DOM educators won in their respective categories: Mike Saag, MD (Infectious Diseases) won for Best Educator in Patient, Doctor, and Society. James Willig, MD, MSPH (Infectious Diseases) won Best Educator in Pulmonary. Shawn Galin, PhD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) won for Endocrine Systems. The philanthropic partnership between the IgA Nephropathy Foundation of America and the UAB IgAN Research Team is continuing to create better outcomes in this degenerative kidney disease. We are delighted to report that Foundation Director Bonnie Schneider recently personally delivered another generous contribution in support of these talented researchers led by Bruce Julian, MD (Nephrology).

Thomas Huddle, MD (General Internal Medicine) has been selected as a 2016 Master Reviewer for the journal Academic Medicine.

Next week at Medical Grand Rounds Julian Booker, MD, UAB Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Disease, will present “Cardiovascular Imaging in the Cancer Patient: Are we doing enough?”
