 According to Mona Fouad, MD (Director, Preventive Medicine) only 25 percent of American adults get the recommended amount of physical activity, and 29 percent don’t engage in any leisure-time physical activity at all. To address this public health problem, the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center recently launched Parks Rx, a program where health care providers literally prescribe exercise for their patients and direct them to local parks and outdoor spaces to get moving. Peter Phan, MD (General Internal Medicine) has won a Faculty Development for Educators/ RIME Immersion Award that will provide support for him to attend the month-long Stanford Faculty Development Program in preparation for designing and implementing a bedside ultrasound curriculum for our residents.

Fellows in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease recently recognized John Huston Holt, MD, for his generous support and unwavering dedication to UAB. Dr. Holt came to UAB in 1961 to pursue his NIH supported cardiovascular research fellowship and has been here ever since, serving in a number of leadership roles both at the University and the VA Medical Center. Many thanks to Dr. Holt for his longstanding example of leadership, dedication, and inspiration.

The UAB Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program led by Salpy Pamboukian, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) has been granted continued ACGME accreditation status. This one-year fellowship is offered to those who have completed a general cardiology fellowship and are seeking advanced training in heart failure, cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Two nephrology trainees Oreoluwa Adedoyin, PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow) and Jeremie Lever (MSTP Student) were recently recognized in the top six poster presentations at 9th International Conference on Heme Oxygenase held in Prague, Czech Republic. Both are co-mentored by Anupam Agarwal, MD (Director, Nephrology) and James George, PhD (Cardiothoracic Surgery).

Sowmya Chandra-Reddy, MD (Fellow, Endocrinology) recently received a travel award to present her poster “Identification of Pre-Diabetes in UAB Weight Loss Clinic” at the national Overcoming Obesity Conference.

Next week at Medical Grand Rounds: Grant Williams, MD, UAB Assistant Professor of Hematology and Oncology will present “Cancer and Aging: The Silver Oncologic Tsunami.”
