Master of the “Massachusetts Model” for treating opioid addiction with buprenorphine, Jeffrey Samet, MD, MA, MPH, recently served as a Tinsley Harrison, MD, Visiting Scholar for the Department of Medicine. His visit, spearheaded by Jessica Merlin, MD, MPH (Infectious Diseases) Stefan Kertesz, MD (Preventive Medicine) and Elizabeth Turnipseed, MD (General Internal Medicine) sparked an important discussion about opioid use, chronic pain, and how UAB might approach addiction medicine in the future. The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine participated in #BlueUp4PF—a social media challenge from the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation to help promote awareness about PF, a condition estimated to affect 1 in 200 persons over 65 that causes lung tissue to become thick, stiff, and scarred. While some treatments are available for patients, there is currently no cure for pulmonary fibrosis.
Monica Baskin, PhD (Preventive Medicine) is one of only 40 applicants selected to join Culture of Health Leaders, a new program co-led by the National Collaborative for Health Equity and CommonHealth ACTION with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Baskin will join others from across the country to participate in leadership development training and to work collaboratively to advance a Culture of Health across the nation. Specifically, she will lead a team within the Health Action Partnership of Jefferson County as they continue to address health inequities in our community.
Emily Simmons, MSN, RN-BC, CNL (Geriatric Scholar Program) has been accepted into the 2016-2017 Gerontological Nursing Leadership Academy. Her inter-professional fellowship project will help expand HELP (Hospital Elder Life Program) which uses volunteers to prevent delirium in extended hospital stays.
David Pollock, PhD (Nephrology) has been selected as an A. Ross McIntyre Awardee, an endowed lectureship at the University of Nebraska highlighting cardio-renal medicine.
U.S. News and World Report has ranked five of the specialties within the Department of Medicine in the top 50 according to its annual Best Hospitals list! Among these high performers is the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, which ranks #11 in the country. Kudos to all involved for this national recognition!
The Seventh Annual Geriatric Quality Symposium will be held Monday, September 26, from Noon until 2:00 p.m. in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. The two-hour event will showcase another incredible year of progress and quality improvement, featuring posters, video highlights, and a formal program with awards and outcome report presentations.
