Ashita Tolwani, MD (Nephrology) was presented with the 2016 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Faculty Convocation on September 12 in the UAB Hill Student Center.

UAB made an impressive showing at last week’s AHA Hypertension and Kidney Council meeting. Suzanne Oparil, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) won the Excellence in Hypertension Award, which is the highest honor given by the AHA in hypertension. Jennifer Pollock, PhD (Nephrology) won the Harriet Dustan Award, and our nephrology trainees did well, too. Josh Speed, PhD, won the junior faculty poster presentation award. Bryan Becker, PhD, won the post-doctoral fellow poster presentation award, and Eman Gohar, PhD, won a New Investigator Travel Award. 

Bill Curry, MD (General Internal Medicine) has been elected as Master of the American College of Physicians in recognition of eminence in practice, leadership, and extraordinary contribution to the field of medicine.

Mark Dransfield, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) was recently published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. His research demonstrated that acute exacerbations of COPD are associated with significant loss of long-term lung function

Kondal Kyanam Kabir Baig, MD (Gastroenterology and Hepatology) has been selected as one of the top five Endoscopy reviewers for 2015.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that is present at birth and affects approximately 100,000 Americans. CDC is committed to studying SCD and other blood disorders in order to improve the health and care of people with these conditions. New resources are now available in the online toolkit.

Next week at Medical Grand Rounds: Amitkumar Mehta, MD, UAB Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology will present “Emerging Concepts in Lymphomas.”
