The National Academy of Medicine has invited Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Director, Preventive Medicine) to become a member and Ellen Eaton, MD, MSPH (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) to become a 2017-2019 Fellow. Dr. Fouad is an institutional leader and researcher in cancer health disparities, and Dr. Eaton is a rising star in translational HIV research. Kudos to both on this prestigious recognition!

Caroline Harada, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has helped forge a community partnership to provide wrap-around care for senior patients at risk of hunger. Read the UAB News story.

According to a recent letter, the son of a patient in the Palliative Care Unit wrote with tremendous gratitude about receiving a simple book that made a difficult situation more bearable. The “tool he didn’t even know he needed” helped him have a difficult conversation with his small children about losing their Poppy.

The American College of Rheumatology will recognize two DOM faculty members at their upcoming December meeting. John Mountz, MD, PhD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) will receive the ACR Master Designation, one of the highest honors the college bestows, and Winn Chatham, MD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) was selected to receive the ACR Distinguished Clinician Scholar Award.

Next Week at Medical Grand Rounds: Lisa Guay-Woodford, MD, Associate VP for Clinical and Translational Research at The George Washington University, will present the 14th Annual Andreoli lecture, “Polycystic Kidney Disease in 2017: New Advances and The Clinical Implications” at noon on Wednesday, October 25, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

The first UAB i2b2 Abstract Contest will provide cash prizes for the best scientific abstract based on data from UAB’s i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) clinical data repository. The contest is co-sponsored by the UAB Informatics Institute and the CCTS, and the details are posted online. Deadline is Friday, November 17.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center will host its annual Research Retreat and Research Competition, on Monday, October 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.

The UAB Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety will host its fifth annual Veterans Disability Symposium to address “The Invisible Wounds of War” on Friday, November 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Lakeshore Foundation.
