UAB faculty from surgery, radiation-oncology, and hematology-oncology have come together to create a one-stop shop for colorectal cancer care. The new multi-disciplinary colorectal cancer clinic opened February 28 at The Kirklin Clinic, just in time to celebrate Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people age 50 and older; but screening can have a huge impact. If everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented.

Two Department of Medicine faculty recently published a chapter in the latest edition of Braunwald’s Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, on “Chronic Lung Diseases and Cardiovascular Disease.” Congratulations to Surya Bhatt, MD (Associate Professor) and Mark Dransfield, MD (Professor) both of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care.
Congratulations to Katherine “Kate” Morgan, Certified Medical Assistant and organizer extraordinaire of the UAB House Calls Program, on being named the Department’s Employee of the Month for February. Kate serves as an advocate for patients, connecting them to resources and bringing them comfort and kindness during difficult times. Without her, the UAB House Calls Program would not be possible! A reception will be held in her honor on Friday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m. in the UAB Highlands Geriatric Clinic Board Room.
Congratulations to Ganesh Halade, PhD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) on his recent publication in the FASEB Journal describing the effects of resolvin D-1 on the kidneys. The bioactive compound injected as a therapeutic dose was shown to limit collateral damage in the kidneys caused by heart attacks, as tested in an animal model, suggesting potential application in the clinical setting.

Dale Abel, MD, PhD (Chair, Dept. of Internal Medicine University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine) presenting, “Leaving Your Comfort Zone and What that Taught Me About Mentorship and Diabetic Complications,” at noon on Wednesday, March 7, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. Abel’s talk kicks off the 34th Annual Trainee Research Symposium; a poster session immediately follows the lecture in North Pavilion Atrium.
