UAB researchers have shown, for the first time, that reduced dietary potassium promotes elevated aortic stiffness in a mouse model, as compared with normal-potassium-fed mice. Such arterial stiffness in humans is predictive of heart disease. The article by Yabing Chen, PhD (Pathology) and co-authors Paul Sanders, MD (Professor, Nephrology), Anupam Agarwal, MD (Professor and Director, Nephrology) and Louis Dell’Italia, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was published in JCI Insight.

Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) recently presented findings from her work exploring racial differences in the gut microbiota of blacks and whites at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved.

The Department is proud to recognize three IM Residents, Chaitanya Allamneni, MD (PGY-2) Neha Hingorani, MD (PGY-2) and Nicolas Ruiz, MD (PGY-1) for taking special care of a patient in hepatology clinic.
